Have you ever wondered why one foundation shade looks perfect on you while another just looks yuckkk. Have you ever tried on a top or a shade of lipstick that makes your skin, eyes, and face pop, while another that’s almost exactly the same shade makes you look washed-out, and just blah? Well that had to do with knowing your skin undertone!!
Knowing your skin undertone can help you choose the makeup that will look the best on you and without making your face look dull, muddy or ashy.
But the million dollar question is: what is skin undertone?
When it comes to beauty, there are few buzzwords as “cool undertones” and “warm undertones” but knowing what they really mean is something else. Well, here is the simple explanation, our skin’s tone is the color you’d describe yourself as having (ivory, light, medium, tan, dark, etc.). Your skin’s undertone is the color underneath the surface. You can have the same skin color as someone, but a different undertone, which are broken down like this:
Cool (pink, red or bluish undertones)Warm (yellow or golden undertones)
Neutral (a mix of warm and cool undertones)
So, how can you determine which category you fall into? There is no definitive way for anyone to determine their undertone. But here are 6 Question that can be used to Help Us Out. Read on!
1. What Color are Your Veins?
Perhaps the easiest way to discern skin’s undertone, although it doesn’t always work for everyone, is to check the color of your veins. If your veins look blue, you have a cool undertone, if they look green you have a warm undertone and if you can’t tell, you’re neutral.
2. What Colors Do You Look Best In?
This is probably a better test, what colors do you look best in? Observe how you look in opposing colors—such as blue-green (cool) or yellow-green (warm) and blue-red (cool) or orange-red (warm). Check your closet and notice if you have a tendency to buy more of one color, either because you look better wearing it or just because you like the color.

3. Gold or Silver?
If you look good in silver, you probably have a cool undertone. If you look better in gold, then you're warm. If you look good in both, you’re probably neutral.
4. Do You Burn or Tan?
If you tan easily and do not burn, the pigment that gives skin its color level is higher, and you most likely have a yellow-to-olive, warm undertone. Whereas, those who burn and either tan minimally or not at all have significantly less melanin, which results in a pink, bluish-red, or ruddy cooler undertone.
5. What are Your Eye and Hair Colors?
People with blue, dark brown, or gray eyes typically have cool complexions, whereas those with amber, green, hazel or light brown eyes often fall into the warm category. If your natural hair is very dark brown, blonde, or black, you likely have pink undertones. (Thats Me) If your locks are strawberry blonde, red or reddish brown, you likely have yellow tones in your skin.
6. The Compliment Test
If you’re still confused, make a note of every compliment you receive about the color of your clothing, hair and of course makeup. If you keep getting compliments about a certain look, you’ll know you’re on the right track.
